Astra Lost in Space

The year is 2061, when space travel is now possible and commercially viable, and the students of Caird High School embark on their Planet Camp. But soon after Group B5 arrived at their planetary camp site, a mysterious and unforeseen sentient light sphere warps its 9 members into outer space, stranding them 5012 light years away from their home planet. With the discovery of an old, unmanned spaceship nearby, the students must stay strong, manage their limited resources and remain united in the darkness of space, so that all of them can survive their long and likely perilous trek back home aboard the Astra.

Reviews/Avis

Michael Eh?

Picked up the first 2 volumes over a year ago. It plays as a mystery as one of the castaways is a traitor. Many suspects as usual but lacks why in the first place but a possible suspect as always. Not bad.

In 2063, eight high school students, along with the ten-year-old sister of one, are sent on an unsupervised five-day field trip to a nearby planet. Since this trip has been part of the school's curriculum for decades, the kids will require something very unusual to send them on an extended, educational, life threatening adventure.
Sure enough, immediately upon arrival they're sucked into a large, spherical mcguffin and flung five thousand light years (not nearby) and almost into the airlock of an abandoned spaceship -- lacking intact long-range communication equipment but otherwise fully functional. Since it draws its fuel from space, they now only need to find adequate supplies of food and water to make their way home. Despite the setup being an unnecessarily contrived blend of Lost in Space, Gilligan's Island and Lord of the Flies, I somehow found myself enjoying the story -- partly due to imaginative worldbuilding but mostly because of the characters. (It also helps that the premise implies that there will be an actual conclusion, rather than an open-ended series.)
Already in the first volume, some of the kids have detailed backgrounds (mentor's-death-driven hero, ditzy-but-smart narrator and bitchy-but-lonely rich kid), and a couple more are have made significant starts on character development. I don't doubt that by the end, all nine of them will have carefully designed backstories, and will have made significant strides toward personal growth and toward overcoming their various emotional challenges.
One theme common to all of the characters in various ways is a level of social cluelessness that complicates their efforts to cooperate for survival; it seems to be equally useful for generating drama and humour. Personally, I prefer the humour -- like the hero's tautological survival tips, or the chick magnet who's so sparkly that even the other characters notice. Another feature I like is the information provided at the ends of the chapters, especially the character lineup after Chapter 3. So despite not particularly wanting to like this book, I was definitely drawn in by it.
