Pencil boards were used by Japanese school children to practice writing without leaving pressure marks on the next page and supply a smooth surface for the page being written on. As time went on, special pencil boards with anime characters were produced for the young audiences. However the use of pencil boards in the aid in wirting has deminished, their collectability for fans of anime shows and characters hasn't.

Even recently pencil boards are even been given away in magazines along with stickers and other 'specials' included with magazines.
